حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ شَفَانِي اللَّهُ مِنْ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَهَبْ لِي هَذَا السَّيْفُ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا السَّيْفَ لَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَا لِي ضَعْهُ قَالَ فَوَضَعْتُهُ ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ قُلْتُ عَسَى أَنْ يُعْطَى هَذَا السَّيْفُ الْيَوْمَ مَنْ لَمْ يُبْلِ بَلَائِي قَالَ إِذَا رَجُلٌ يَدْعُونِي مِنْ وَرَائِي قَالَ قُلْتُ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ فِيَّ شَيْءٌ قَالَ كُنْتَ سَأَلْتَنِي السَّيْفَ وَلَيْسَ هُوَ لِي وَإِنَّهُ قَدْ وُهِبَ لِي فَهُوَ لَكَ قَالَ وَأُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنْ الْأَنْفَالِ قُلْ الْأَنْفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ

It was narrated from Mus'ab bin Saad that Saad bin Malik said: O Messenger of Allah, I feel joy because Allah enabled me to wreak vengeance on the mushrikeen ; grant me this sword. He said: "This sword is not for you and it is not for me; leave it alone," So I put it down, then I came back and said: Perhaps this sword will be given today to someone who did not do as well as me. Then I heard a man calling me from behind and I said: Has something been revealed concerning me? He said; You asked me about the sword, and it was not mine. But now it has been granted to me, and it is yours." And he said: This verse was revealed interpretation of the meaning): They ask you (O Muhammad (PBUH) about the spoils of war,say: The spoils are for Allah and the Messenger" [al-Anfal 8:1].

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ قَالَ وَجَدْتُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي بِخَطِّ يَدِهِ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْمُتَعَالِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأُمَوِيُّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ وَحَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا الْمُجَالِدُ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ عِلَاقَةَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ قَالَ لَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ جَاءَتْهُ جُهَيْنَةُ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكَ قَدْ نَزَلْتَ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِنَا فَأَوْثِقْ لَنَا حَتَّى نَأْتِيَكَ وَتُؤْمِنَّا فَأَوْثَقَ لَهُمْ فَأَسْلَمُوا قَالَ فَبَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَجَبٍ وَلَا نَكُونُ مِائَةً وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُغِيرَ عَلَى حَيٍّ مِنْ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ إِلَى جَنْبِ جُهَيْنَةَ فَأَغَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ وَكَانُوا كَثِيرًا فَلَجَأْنَا إِلَى جُهَيْنَةَ فَمَنَعُونَا وَقَالُوا لِمَ تُقَاتِلُونَ فِي الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ فَقُلْنَا إِنَّمَا نُقَاتِلُ مَنْ أَخْرَجَنَا مِنْ الْبَلَدِ الْحَرَامِ فِي الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ فَقَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ مَا تَرَوْنَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُنَا نَأْتِي نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَنُخْبِرُهُ وَقَالَ قَوْمٌ لَا بَلْ نُقِيمُ هَاهُنَا وَقُلْتُ أَنَا فِي أُنَاسٍ مَعِي لَا بَلْ نَأْتِي عِيرَ قُرَيْشٍ فَنَقْتَطِعُهَا فَانْطَلَقْنَا إِلَى الْعِيرِ وَكَانَ الْفَيْءُ إِذْ ذَاكَ مَنْ أَخَذَ شَيْئًا فَهُوَ لَهُ فَانْطَلَقْنَا إِلَى الْعِيرِ وَانْطَلَقَ أَصْحَابُنَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ الْخَبَرَ فَقَامَ غَضْبَانًا مُحْمَرَّ الْوَجْهِ فَقَالَ أَذَهَبْتُمْ مِنْ عِنْدِي جَمِيعًا وَجِئْتُمْ مُتَفَرِّقِينَ إِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ الْفُرْقَةُ لَأَبْعَثَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ رَجُلًا لَيْسَ بِخَيْرِكُمْ أَصْبَرُكُمْ عَلَى الْجُوعِ وَالْعَطَشِ فَبَعَثَ عَلَيْنَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ جَحْشٍ الْأَسَدِيَّ فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ أَمِيرٍ أُمِّرَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ

It was narrated that Saad bin Abi Waqqas said: When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) came to Madinah, (the tribe of) Juhainah came to him and said: You have settled amongst us; write it in a document for us so that we may come to you and you may grant safety for us. So he wrote a document for them and they became Muslims. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent us on an expedition in Rajab, and we were less than one hundred men. He ordered us to raid a clan of Banu Kinanah who lived beside Juhainah, so we attacked them and they were great in number. We sought refuge with Juhainah and they give us protection, but they said: Why are you fighting in the sacred month? He said: We are only fighting those who expelled us from the sacred land in the sacred month. And we said to one another: What do you think? Some of us said: We will go to the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) and tell him. And some people said: No; rather we will stay here. 1 and some people who were with me said: No; rather we will go to the caravan of Quraish and intercept it. So we set out to capture the caravan. The way the booty was given at that time was that whoever took something, it was his. So we went towards the aravan, and our companions went to the Prophet (PBUH) and told him what had happened. He got up angrily, and his face turned red and he said: "You went away from me together and came back separately? Those who came before you were destroyed because of division. I shall certainly send as the commander over you a man who is not the best of you but he is the most patient in bearing hunger and thirst.” And he sent to us as our commander 'Abdullah bin Jahsh al-Asadi, and he was the first commander appointed in Islam.

حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ عَنْ زَائِدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ وَعَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ وَعَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تُقَاتِلُونَ جَزِيرَةَ الْعَرَبِ فَيَفْتَحُهَا اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ثُمَّ تُقَاتِلُونَ فَارِسَ فَيَفْتَحُهَا اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ثُمَّ تُقَاتِلُونَ الرُّومَ فَيَفْتَحُهَا اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ثُمَّ تُقَاتِلُونَ الدَّجَّالَ فَيَفْتَحُهُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ قَالَ فَقَالَ جَابِرٌ لَا يَخْرُجُ الدَّجَّالُ حَتَّى يُفْتَتَحَ الرُّومُ

it was narrated that Nafi' bin 'Utbah bin Abi Waqqas said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "You will fight in Arabia and Allah will grant you victory over it, then you will fight Persia and Allah will grant you victory over it, then you will fight Byzantium and Allah will grant you victory over it. Then you will fight the Dajjal and Allah will grant you victory over him.” Jabir said: The Dajjal will not emerge until the Byzantines are conquered.

حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ تَغْزُونَ جَزِيرَةَ الْعَرَبِ فَيَفْتَحُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَتَغْزُونَ فَارِسَ فَيَفْتَحُهَا اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَتَغْزُونَ الرُّومَ فَيَفْتَحُهَا اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَتَغْزُونَ الدَّجَّالَ فَيَفْتَحُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ابْنِ لَبِيبَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْمَزَارِعِ فِي زَمَانِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانُوا يُكْرُونَ مَزَارِعَهُمْ بِمَا يَكُونُ عَلَى السَّوَاقِي مِنْ الزُّرُوعِ وَمَا سَعِدَ بِالْمَاءِ مِمَّا حَوْلَ النَّبْتِ فَجَاءُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاخْتَصَمُوا فِي بَعْضِ ذَلِكَ فَنَهَاهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُكْرُوا بِذَلِكَ وَقَالَ أَكْرُوا بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ

It was narrated from Saad bin Abi Waqqas that some people who owned farmland at the time of the Messenger of Allah used to rent out their farmland in return for what grew on the edges of streams and whatever grew by means of water around the wells. They came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and disputed concerning some of that, so the Messenger of Allah (afe) forbade them to rent out the land like that and he said: "Rent it out for gold and silver."

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوُبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ بْنِ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ ابْنُ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِذَا تَنَخَّمَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَلْيُغَيِّبْ نُخَامَتَهُ أَنْ تُصِيبَ جِلْدَ مُؤْمِنٍ أَوْ ثَوْبَهُ فَتُؤْذِيَهُ

It was narrated from 'Amir bin Saad that his father Saad said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "If one of you spits in the mosque, let him bury his sputum lest it get onto the skin or garment of a believer and annoy him."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ قَالَ سُئِلَ سَعْدٌ عَنْ الْبَيْضَاءِ بِالسُّلْتِ فَكَرِهَهُ وَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسْأَلُ عَنْ الرُّطَبِ بِالتَّمْرِ فَقَالَ يَنْقُصُ إِذَا يَبِسَ قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَلَا إِذَنْ

It was narrated that Zaid Abu Ayyash said: Saad was asked about selling wheat for thin- husked barley. He disliked it and said: I heard the Prophet (PBUH) being asked about selling fresh dates for dried dates and he said: "Does it shrink when it is dried?" They said: Yes. He said: "Then no."

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ بَلَغَ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعْظَمُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِي الْمُسْلِمِينَ جُرْمًا مَنْ سَأَلَ عَنْ أَمْرٍ لَمْ يُحَرَّمْ فَحُرِّمَ عَلَى النَّاسِ مِنْ أَجْلِ مَسْأَلَتِهِ

It was narrated from 'Amir bin Saad, from his father, who attributed it to the Prophet (PBUH)"The Muslim who causes the greatest offence against the Muslims is the one who asks about something that was not forbidden, then it became forbidden for the people because of his asking."

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ مَرِضْتُ بِمَكَّةَ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ مَرَضًا شَدِيدًا أَشْفَيْتُ مِنْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ فَأَتَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعُودُنِي قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي مَالًا كَثِيرًا وَلَيْسَ يَرِثُنِي إِلَّا ابْنَتِي أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِثُلُثَيْ مَالِي وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً أَتَصَدَّقُ بِمَالِي قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَأَتَصَدَّقُ بِثُلُثَيْ مَالِي قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَالشَّطْرُ قَالَ لَا قَالَ قُلْتُ الثُّلُثُ قَالَ الثُّلُثُ وَالثُّلُثُ كَبِيرٌ إِنَّكَ أَنْ تَتْرُكَ وَرَثَتَكَ أَغْنِيَاءَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَتْرُكَهُمْ عَالَةً يَتَكَفَّفُونَ النَّاسَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً إِلَّا أُجِرْتَ فِيهَا حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى فِي امْرَأَتِكَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أُخَلَّفُ عَنْ هِجْرَتِي قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُخَلَّفَ بَعْدِي فَتَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا تُرِيدُ بِهِ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا ازْدَدْتَ بِهِ رِفْعَةً وَدَرَجَةً وَلَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُخَلَّفَ حَتَّى يَنْتَفِعَ بِكَ أَقْوَامٌ وَيُضَرَّ بِكَ آخَرُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمْضِ لِأَصْحَابِي هِجْرَتَهُمْ وَلَا تَرُدَّهُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ لَكِنْ الْبَائِسُ سَعْدُ ابْنُ خَوْلَةَ يَرْثِي لَهُ أَنْ مَاتَ بِمَكَّةَ

It was narrated from 'Amir bin Saad, that his father said: I fell sick in Makkah during the year of the conquest and was so sick that I almost died. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) came to visit me whilst I was sick. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have a great deal of wealth and no one will inherit from me except my daughter. Can I give two thirds of my wealth in charity? - on one occasion Sufyan said: Can I give all of my wealth in charity? - He said: "No." I said: Can I give two thirds of my wealth in charity? He said: "No." I said: Half? He said: "No." I said: One third? He said: "One third, and one third is a lot. If you leave your heirs independent of means, that is better than leaving them dependent and asking of people. You will never spend anything (on their maintenance) but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel that you lift to your wife's mouth," I said: O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind (in Makkah) and lose the virtue of my migration ( Hijrah )? He said: "If you are left behind after me but you do good deeds, seeking thereby the ountenance of Allah, you will rise thereby in status. Perhaps you will be left behind so that some people may be benefitted through you and others may be harmed through you. O Allah, complete the migration of my Companions and do not cause them to turn back on their heels. The one who is truly unfortunate is Saad bin Khawlah." He (the Prophet (PBUH) felt sorry for him because he died in Makkah.

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ أَنْتَ مِنِّي بِمَنْزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوسَى قِيلَ لِسُفْيَانَ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ لَا نَبِيَّ بَعْدِي قَالَ قَالَ نَعَمْ

It was narrated from Saad that the Prophet (PBUH) said to 'Ali: "You are to me as Haroon was to Moosa." It was said to Sufyan: "But there is no Prophet after me." [Sufyan] said: Yes.

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ شَكَا أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ سَعْدًا إِلَى عُمَرَ فَقَالُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُحْسِنُ يُصَلِّي قَالَ آلْأَعَارِيبُ وَاللَّهِ مَا آلُو بِهِمْ عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ أَرْكُدُ فِي الْأُولَيَيْنِ وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ فَسَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ كَذَلِكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ يَا أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ

It was narrated from 'Abdul-Malik, who heard it from Jabir bin Samurah: The people of Koofah complained to 'Umar about Saad and said: He does not pray properly. He said: The Bedouin? By Allah, I strive hard to make my prayer with them as much like the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) as I can. In Zuhr and 'Asr I make the first two rak'ahs long and I make the last two short. I heard 'Umar say: That is what I thought of you, O Abu Ishaq.

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَمْرٍو سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي نَهِيكٍ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَتَغَنَّ بِالْقُرْآنِ

It was narrated from 'Ubaidullah bin Abi Naheek, that Saad bin Abi Waqqas said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "He is not one of us who does not feel that the Qur'an is sufficient."
