Why Hadith is essential to understanding Islam

The Qur'an, revealed in seventh-century Arabia over a period of twenty-three years, is the primary source of guidance in Islam. Yet the Qur'an itself, in dozens of verses, directs the believer to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — to obey his commands, refrain from what he forbade, and emulate his character. The Sunnah — the body of his sayings, actions, and tacit approvals — is the necessary companion of the Qur'an in any sincere attempt to live the religion as it was taught.

Without the Hadith, vast portions of Islamic practice would be unintelligible. The Qur'an commands the believer to pray, but it does not specify how many units of prayer to perform at each of the five daily times, what to recite, when to bow, when to prostrate, or what supplications to make. It commands fasting, but does not detail what breaks the fast or what compensates for breaking it. It commands pilgrimage, but does not lay out the sequence of rites in Makkah and Mina. All of this — the practical content of Islam — comes through the Prophetic Sunnah preserved in the Hadith.

This section presents the case for Hadith as an indispensable source of Islamic knowledge, drawing on Qur'anic evidence, the Prophet's own statements, the practice of the early community, and reasoned argument.

Hadith Explains the Qur'an

The Qur'an itself assigns this explanatory role to the Prophet ﷺ in Surah al-Nahl (16:44): "We have sent down to you the Reminder so that you may explain to mankind what was revealed to them." The examples below illustrate how the Hadith fulfils this role.

Prayer (Salah)

Quran

Qur'an: "Establish prayer." (al-Baqarah 2:43)

Hadith

Detailed instructions on the number of rak'ahs at each time, the recitations, the postures, the supplications, the conditions of validity, the times of each prayer. "Pray as you have seen me pray." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Zakat (Almsgiving)

Quran

Qur'an: "Give Zakat." (al-Baqarah 2:43, repeated many times)

Hadith

Detailed thresholds (nisab), rates (typically 2.5% on wealth), categories of wealth subject to Zakat, eligible recipients, timing.

Pilgrimage (Hajj)

Quran

Qur'an: "Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by those who are able." (Al 'Imran 3:97)

Hadith

The sequence of rites (Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, Wuquf at Arafah, Muzdalifah, Mina, the slaughter), the timing, the prohibitions in Ihram, the specifics of every ritual.

"The Book and the Hikmah" — the Hadith scholars have understood this Qur'anic phrase, repeated in several verses, as a reference to the Qur'an and the Sunnah as twin sources of guidance.

— Imam al-Shafi'i

Qur'anic Verses Establishing the Authority of the Prophet ﷺ

"Obey Allah and obey the Messenger."

al-Nisa' 4:59

"Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah."

al-Nisa' 4:80

"Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it."

al-Hashr 59:7

"Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example."

al-Ahzab 33:21

"He does not speak from desire; it is only revelation revealed to him."

al-Najm 53:3–4

"We have sent down to you the Reminder so that you may explain to mankind what was revealed to them."

al-Nahl 16:44

The Prophet's ﷺ Own Statements on the Authority of His Sunnah

"I have been given the Qur'an and something similar to it."

— Sunan Abu Dawud

Imam al-Shafi'i and others understood "something similar to it" as a reference to the Sunnah.

"Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me."

— Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

"I have left among you two things; you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah."

— al-Muwatta of Imam Malik

Engaging with the 'Qur'an-Only' Position

The Qur'an itself establishes the binding authority of the Prophet's example in the verses above. To claim that one follows the Qur'an while rejecting the Sunnah is to reject the Qur'an's own instruction to obey the Messenger. The position is internally inconsistent: it asks the believer to follow a book that commands them to follow a teacher whose teachings they then refuse to accept.

The historical impossibility of practicing Islam from the Qur'an alone is evident in the fundamentals: the five daily prayers have no procedural detail in the Qur'an, the rates of Zakat are not specified, the rites of Hajj are not enumerated. Every generation of Muslims from the Sahaba onward has combined the Qur'an with the Prophetic Sunnah. There is no historical example of an Islam practiced from the Qur'an alone because such a practice is not possible.

The Hadith Nabawi platform is committed to evidence-based, charitable, and rigorous engagement with this question and welcomes serious scholarly dialogue.
