It was narrated that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said: (The soorah) "By the winds (or angels or the Messengers of Allah) sent forth one after another" [al-Mursalaat 77:1] was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) on the night of the snake. He" (the narrator) said: We said to him: What was the night of the snake, O Abu 'Abd ar-Rahmaan? He said: Whilst we were with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) in Hira' one night, a snake came out towards us from the mountain. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) told us to kill it, so w e chased it but it got away from us. So he said: "Let it be; Allah protected it from your evil just as He protected you from its evil."

Then I came close to him and he recited the shahaadah, then he said: "O Quraysh, you are in charge of this matter, so long as you do not disobey Allah; but if y OU disobey A Ilah, He will send against you people who will strip you (of your authority) like this twig" referring to a twig lie had i n his hand, which he stripped of its bark and cast aside, and it was shining wliite.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said: Whilst we were with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) in Makkah, and he was with a group of his companions, he said: "Let one of you come with me, and let no one come with me but a man in whose heart is not even an atom's weight of dishonesty." So I got up to go with him, and I took a vessel with me, not thinki n g that it contained anything but water. I set out with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) until, when we were in the upper part of Makkah, I saw some shadows gathered together. The Messenger of Allah drew a line for me then he said: "Stay here until I come to you." So I stayed and the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) went to them and I saw them crowding around him. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) spoke with them all night long, then he came to me at dawn and he said to me: "Are you still here, O Ibn Mas'ood?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, did you not tell me. Stay here until I come to you? Then he said to me: you have any water for wudoo'?" I said: yes. Then I opened the vessel and saw that it was nabeedh (a drink made by soaking dates in water). I said to him: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah when I picked up the vessel I did not think that it contained anything but water, but it turned out to be nabeedh. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "Good dates and pure water." Then he did wudoo' with it, and when he stood up to pray, two of them came to him and said to him O Messenger of Allah , we would like you to lead us in our prayer. So the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) made them stand in a row behind him then he led us in prayer. When he finished I said to him: Who are these, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "These are the jinn of Naseebeen; they came to me concerning a dispute about some of their affairs. And they asked me for provision, so i granted them provision." I said to him: O Messenger of Allah, do you have anything that you could grant to them as provision? He said: "I granted them excrement; whatever they find of dung they will find it like barley, and whatever they find of bones, they will find them with meat on them." And at that time the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade cleaning oneself (after relieving oneself) with dung or bones

It was narrated that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) taught me the tashahhud in the middle 0f the prayer and at the end of it. [The narrator said:] We memorized it from 'Abdullah when he told us that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) taught it tp him- He said: He used to say, when he sat on his left hip in the nuddle of the prayer and at the end; "All compliments, prayers an d pure words are due to Allah, peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us, and upon the righteous slaves of Allah I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.” Then if it was in the middle of the prayer, he would get up when he finished the tashahhud, and if it was the end of the prayer, he would offer supplication (du'aa') after the prayer as Allah willed he should, then he would say the tasleem.

Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi narrated from one who told him, that he said: Whilst we were in the mosque of Kufah one day, when'Ammaar ibn Yaasi r was the governor of Kufah for 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab (RA), and 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood was in charge of the bayt al-maal, 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood looked at the shade and saw that it was the length of a sandal strap. He said: If this companion of yours ('Ammaar) is going to pray according to the Sunnah of your Prophet, lie will come out now. By Allah, no sooner had'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood finished speaking, but 'Ammaar ibn Yaasir came out and said: (Time for) prayer.

'Abd ar-Rahmaan ibn al-Aswad ibn Yazeed an-Nakha'i narrated that his father said: My paternal uncle 'Alqamah and I entered upon 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood in the middle of the day, and he recited the iqaamah for zuhr in order to pray. We stood behind him and he took hold of my hand and my uncle's hand, and he made one of us stand to his right and the other to his left, then he stood in front of us and we formed one row behind him. Then he said This is what the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to do if they were three. Then he led us in prayer, and when he bowed he put his hands together and rested his forearms on his thighs, placing his hands between his knees. When he had said the salaam, he turned to us and said: There will be rulers who delay the prayer from its proper time. If they do that, do not wait for them to do it, and make your prayer with them naafil.

It was narrated that Abu Shurayh al-Khuzaa'i said: The sun was eclipsed at the time of 'llthnaan ibn 'Affaan when "Abdullah ibn Mas'ood was in Madinah. 'Uthmaan came out and led the people in offering that prayer, with two bows and two Prostrations in each rak'ah. Then Uthmaan left and went into his house. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood sat beside 'Aa'ishah's apartment and we sit with him. He said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to instruct us to pray when there was an eclipse of the sun or moon. So if you see that has happened, hasten to pray, for it is what you fear, it will happen when you are not in a state of heedlessness, and if it is not that, then vou will have done something good and you will have earned (some hasanah).
