It was narrated that Yazeed bin Hurmuz said: Najdah wrote to Ibn 'Abbas (RA), asking him about five things. Ibn 'Abbas said: People are saying that Ibn 'Abbas is corresponding with the Haroorivyah (i.e. the Khavvarij). Were it not for (fear of) concealing knowledge, I would not have written to him. Najdah wrote to him (saying): Tell me, did the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) take women on campaigns with him? Did he give them a share (of the booty)? Did he kill children? At what point is an orphan no longer considered to be such? And about the khumus - who is it for? Ibn 'Abbas wrote to him saying: 'Hie Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did take women on campaigns with him so that they might treat the wounded, and they were not given any share, but they were given something from the booty. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did not kill children, so do not kill children, unless you have knowledge such as al-Khadir had about the boy whom he killed, so you kill the kafir and leave the believer. And you wrote and asked me when the orphan is no longer considered to be such. Indeed, a man's beard may grow but he may still be incapable of getting his due from others, but when he can look after his affairs like other people, then he is no longer regarded as an orphan. And with regard to the khumus and who it is for, we used to think that it was for us, but our people have denied it to us.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas (RA) said: When the verse "And come not near to the orphan's property except to improve it" [al- An'am 6:52, al-Isra' 17:34] was revealed, they put orphans' wealth aside, until the food started to go off and meat began to go rotten. Mention of that was made to the Prophet (mb then the verse "and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allah knows him who means mischief (e.g. to swallow their property) from him who means good (e.g. to save their property)" [al-Baqarah 2:220] was revealed. He said: Then they mixed their affairs with theirs.

It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ood said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sent me to the Negus, and we were approximately eighty men, among whom were Abdullah ibn Mas'ood, Ja'far, Abdullah ibn 'Urfutah, 'Uthmaan Ibn Maz'oon and Abu Moosa, who came to the Negus. Then Quraysh sent 'Amr ibn al-'Aas and Umaarah ibn al-Waleed with gift. When they entered upon the Negus they prostrated to him, then they hastened towards him from his right and from his left and said to him: Some of our cousins have come to your land; they have abandoned us and our religion. He said: Where are they? They said: They are in your land; send for them. So he sent for them and Jafar said (to the other Muslims): i will be your spokesman today - so they followed him. He greeted (the Negus) but did not prostrate, and they said to him: Why dorit you prostrate to the king? He said We do not prostrate to anyone except Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. He said: Why is that? [ja'far] said: Because Allah (PBUH) has sent to us His Messenger, and he instructed us not to prostrate to anyone except Allah (PBUH), and he instructed us to pray and to give zakaah. 'Amr ibn al-' Aas said: They differ with you concerning 'Eesa ibn Maryam. He said: What do you say concerning 'Eesa ibn Maryam and his mother? They said: We said as Allah (PBUH) said: he is the Word of Allah and the Spirit created by Him that He bestowed upon the virgin whom no man has touched (The Negus) picked up a stick from the ground, then he said: O Abyssinians, O priests and monks, by Allah he did not add to what we say about him even as much as this (stick). Welcome to you aud to the one from whom you have come. I bear witness that lie is the Messenger of Allah and he is the one whom we find in the Gospel; he is the Messenger who was foretold by 'Eesa ibn Maryam. Stay wherever you want for by Allah, were it not that i am preoccupied with the responsibilities of kingship, I would go to him so that I might carry his shoes and bring him water for his ablutions. Then he ordered that the gifts of the others be returned to them. Then 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ood hastened (back to the Hijaz) and Was among those who were present at Badr; and he said that the Prophet (PBUH) prayed for forgiveness for him (the Negus) when news Of his death reached him.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "Islam is built upon five [pillars]: the testimony that there is no god but Allah; establishing regular prayer (salaah); paying the zakaah; Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House; and fasting Ramadaan.” Then a man said to him: And jihad for the sake of Allah? Ibn 'Umar said: Jihad is good, but this is what the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said to us.
