حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ قَالَ وَأَخْبَرَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ صِلَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ جَاءَ الْعَاقِبُ وَالسَّيِّدُ صَاحِبَا نَجْرَانَ قَالَ وَأَرَادَا أَنْ يُلَاعِنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تُلَاعِنْهُ فَوَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ نَبِيًّا فَلَعَنَّا قَالَ خَلَفٌ فَلَاعَنَّا لَا نُفْلِحُ نَحْنُ وَلَا عَقِبُنَا أَبَدًا قَالَ فَأَتَيَاهُ فَقَالَا لَا نُلَاعِنُكَ وَلَكِنَّا نُعْطِيكَ مَا سَأَلْتَ فَابْعَثْ مَعَنَا رَجُلًا أَمِينًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَأَبْعَثَنَّ رَجُلًا أَمِينًا حَقَّ أَمِينٍ حَقَّ أَمِينٍ قَالَ فَاسْتَشْرَفَ لَهَا أَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ قُمْ يَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَفَّا قَالَ هَذَا أَمِينُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 3930
It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ood (RA) said: al-'Aqib and as Sayyid, the leaders of Najran, came and wanted to engage in mula'anah (mutual invoking of curses upon whichever party is wrong) with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). Then one of them said to the other: Do not engage in mula'anah with him, for by Allah if he is a Prophet and engages in mula'anah with us, we will never prosper and neither will our offspring. Then they went to him and said: We will not engage in mula'anah with you; rather we will give you what you asked for. Send with us a trustworthy man. And the Prophet (PBUH) said: "I shall certainly send a trustworthy man; he is indeed trustworthy, he is indeed trustworthy." All the Companions of Muhammad (PBUH) hoped to be the one, then he said: "Get up, O Abu 'Ubaidah bin al- Jarrah." When he left with them, he (the Prophet (PBUH)) said: "This is the trustee of this ummah "
