حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ يَعْنِي الطَّحَّانَ حَدَّثَنَا بَيَانٌ عَنْ وَبَرَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ جُبَيْرٍ يَعْنِي سَعِيدًا عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا ابْنُ عُمَرَ وَنَحْنُ نَرْجُو أَنْ يُحَدِّثَنَا بِحَدِيثٍ يُعْجِبُنَا فَبَدَرَنَا إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْقِتَالِ فِي الْفِتْنَةِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّى لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ أَتَدْرِي مَا الْفِتْنَةُ إِنَّمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُقَاتِلُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَكَانَ الدُّخُولُ فِي دِينِهِمْ فِتْنَةً وَلَيْسَ بِقِتَالِكُمْ عَلَى الْمُلْكِ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5690
It was narrated that Sa'eed ibn Jubayr said: Ibn 'Umar came out to us when we were hoping that he would say something to us that we would like. Then a man hastened towards him and said: O Abu 'Abd ar-Rahmaan, what do you say about fighting when there is fitnah (turmoil between Muslims)? For Allah (PBUH) says: "And fight them until there is no more Fitnah" [al-Baqarah 2:193]. He said: Woe to you! do you know what fitnah is? The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) only used to fight the mushrikeen, and joining their religion was fitnah; he was not like you, fighting one another for power!
