It was narrated that 'Umar (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "The likeness of the one who takes back his charity is that of one who goes back to his vomit.”

It was narrated that Malik bin Aws bin al-Hadathan said: 'Umar bin al-Khattab (RA) sent for me, and whilst I was like that, his freed slave Yarfa' came and said: 'Uthman, 'Abdur-Rahman, Sa'd and az-Zubair bin al-'Awwam are here - (the narrator) said: I do not know whether he mentioned Talhah or not - and they are asking for permission to enter upon you. He said: Let them in. Then after a while, (Yarfa') came and said: al-' Abbas and 'Ali are asking permission to enter upon you. He said: Let them in. When al- 'Abbas came in, he said: O Ameer al-Mu'mineen, judge between me and this one. They had a dispute at that time concerning the fax' (booty) that Allah had granted to His Messenger of the wealth of Banun-Nadeer. The people said: Judge between them, O Ameer al- Mu'mineen, and relieve each one of his opponent, for their dispute has gone on too long. 'Umar (RA) said: I adjure you by Allah, by Whose Leave heaven and earth exist, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "We are not to be inherited from; what we leave behind is charity"? They said: He did say that. He said: I shall tell you about that fax') Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, gave something exclusively to His Prophet (PBUH) that He did not give to anyone else. And he quoted the verse: "And what Allah gave as booty (Fai') to His Messenger (Muhammad (PBUH)) from them - for this you made no expedition with either cavalry or camelry" [al-Hashr 59:6]. He said: 'This was exclusively for the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and by Allah, he did not keep it to himself in exclusion of you and he did not prefer himself over you with regard to it Rather he gave it to you and divided it among you until there was nothing left of it except this property. He spent on his family's needs from this property for one year, then he took what was left and regarded it as the property of Allah. When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) passed away, Abu Bakr said: "I am the successor of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), shall deal with it as the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) dealt with it.

It was narrated that 'Ali (RA) said: 'Umar bin al-Khattab (RA) said to the people: What do you think about what we have with us that is left over from this wealth? The people said: O Ameer al-Mu'mineen, we kept you away from your family, your land and your trade; it is yours. He said to me: What do you think? I said: That they have suggested some- thing to you. He said: Speak. I said: Why do you want to opt for uncertainty rather than certainty? He said: Stop talking like that. I said: Yes, by Allah, I will stop. Do you remember when the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) sent you to collect zakah, and you went to al-' Abbas bin 'Abdul-Muttalib (RA) and he withheld something from you? There was some misunder-standing between you and you said to me: Come with me to the Prophet (PBUH), but we found him feeling low, so we went back. Then the next morning we came to him and we found him in a good mood, so you told him what had happened and he said to you: "Don't you know that a man's unde is like his father?" We told him what we had seen of his low mood the day before and what we saw of his good mood on the second day, and he said: "You came to me on the first day when I still had two dinars of the zakat left over, and what you saw of my low mood was because of that. And when you came to me today, I had given them [to someone] and that is why you saw me in a good mood." 'Umar (RA) said: By Allah, you are speaking the truth; I should be grateful to you in this world and in the Hereafter.

So I got up and looked through a hole in the door, and he spotted me. When he gave me permission to enter, we went to him and sat down. He said: Which of you looked into my house just now? I said: It was me. He said: On what basis did you regard it as permissible to look into my house? I said: Permission (to enter) was slow in coming, so I took a look, I did not do it for a bad reason. Then they asked him about various things, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say:"Islam is built upon five [pillars]: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (PBUH) is the Messenger of Allah; establishing regular prayer (salaah); paying the zakaah; Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House; and fasting Ramadaan. I said O Abu 'Abd ar-Ralunaan, what do you say about striving (jihad)? He said: Whoever strives is striving for his own benefit.

He said: Tell them that I have nothing to do with them and they have nothing to do with me. Then he said: Jibreel (AS) came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: "O Muhammad, what is Islam?" He said: "To worship Allah, not associating anything with Him; to establish prayer; to pay zakaah; tu fast Ramadan; and to go on pilgrimage to the House." He said: If I do that, will I be a Muslim? He said: "Yes." He said: you are right; what is ihsaan? He said: "To fear Allah as if you can see Him and if you cannot see him He can see you." He said: If I do that, will I be a muhsin? He said: "Yes." He said: You are right; what is faith? He said: "To believe in Allah, His Angels, His books, His Messengers, the resurrection after death, Paradise and Hell, and the divine decree in its entirety.” He said: If I do that, will I be a believer? He said: "Yes." He said You are right.
