حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الْعَمِّيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الصِّدِّيقِ النَّاجِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ نِسَاءَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَأَلْنَهُ عَنْ الذَّيْلِ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْنَهُ شِبْرًا فَقُلْنَ إِنَّ شِبْرًا لَا يَسْتُرُ مِنْ عَوْرَةٍ فَقَالَ اجْعَلْنَهُ ذِرَاعًا فَكَانَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ إِذَا أَرَادَتْ أَنْ تَتَّخِذَ دِرْعًا أَرْخَتْ ذِرَاعًا فَجَعَلَتْهُ ذَيْلًا
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5637
lt was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the wives of the Prophet (PBUH) asked him about the hem. He said: "Make it a hand span (dragging on the ground)." They said: A hand Span will not cover the 'awrah. He said: "Make it a cubit." So when one of them wanted to make a garment, she would add a cubit and make that a hem (dragging on the ground)."
