حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ قَيْسٍ الْمَأْرِبِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا ثُمَامَةُ بْنُ شَرَاحِيلَ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَقُلْنَا مَا صَلَاةُ الْمُسَافِرِ فَقَالَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ إِلَّا صَلَاةَ الْمَغْرِبِ ثَلَاثًا قُلْتُ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كُنَّا بِذِي الْمَجَازِ قَالَ وَمَا ذُو الْمَجَازِ قُلْتُ مَكَانًا نَجْتَمِعُ فِيهِ وَنَبِيعُ فِيهِ وَنَمْكُثُ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً أَوْ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةً قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّجُلُ كُنْتُ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ لَا أَدْرِي قَالَ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ أَوْ شَهْرَيْنِ فَرَأَيْتُهُمْ يُصَلُّونَهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَرَأَيْتُ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نُصْبَ عَيْنِي يُصَلِّيهِمَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ نَزَعَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْ الْآيَةِ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5552
Thumaamah ibn Sharaaheel said: I went out to Ibn 'Umar and we said: What is the prayer of the traveller? He said: Two rak'ahs in each prayer, except Maghrib prayer, which is three. I said: What do you think if we are in Dhu'l-Majaaz? He said: What is Dhu']-Majaaz ? I said: A place where we gather and sell.” and we stay there for twenty days or fifteen days. He said: O man, I Was in Azerbaijan for I do not know how long, four months or two months, and I saw them praying (each prayer with) two rak'ahs. And I saw the Prophet of Allah with my own eyes, praying them with two rak'ahs (when travelling). Then he recited this verse: "Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW) you have a good example to follow.[al-Ahzaab 33:21], to the end of the verse.
