حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُوحٍ يَعْنِي قُرَادًا أَنْبَأَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي الْهُذَيْلِ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَسَأَلُوهُ عَنْ الْوَتْرِ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ نُوتِرَ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ ثَوِّبْ يَا ابْنَ النَّبَّاحِ أَوْ أَذِّنْ أَوْ أَقِمْ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 689
It was narrated that a man from Banu Asad said: 'Ali bin Abi Talib (RA) came out to us and they asked him about Witr. He said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) commanded us to pray Witr at this time. O Ibn an-Nabbah, give the adhan - or, say the iqamah.
