حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُعَاوِيِّ أَنَّ رَجُلًا صَلَّى إِلَى جَنْبِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَجَعَلَ يَعْبَثُ بِالْحَصَى فَقَالَ لَا تَعْبَثْ بِالْحَصَى فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلَكِنْ اصْنَعْ كَمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصْنَعُ قَالَ هَكَذَا وَأَرَانَا وُهَيْبٌ وَصَفَهُ عَفَّانُ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى وَبَسَطَ أَصَابِعَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَكَأَنَّهُ عَقَدَ وَأَشَارَ بِالسَّبَّابَةِ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5421
It was narrated from 'Ali ibn ar-Rahmaan ahMu'aawi that a man prayed beside Ibn Umar, and he started playing with the pebbles. He said: Do not play with the pebbles, for that is from the Shaytaan; rather do what the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to do. And he did something like this; Wuhayb showed us and ‘Affean described it to us: He placed his left hand, with the fingers outspread, on his left knee, and bis placed his right hand on his right knee, clenching the fingers and pointing with his index finger.
