حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَكَانَ يَجْعَلُ فَصَّهُ فِي بَاطِنِ يَدِهِ قَالَ فَطَرَحَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَطَرَحَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَهُمْ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَكَانَ يَخْتِمُ بِهِ وَلَا يَلْبَسُهُ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5366
It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: The Prophet (PBUH) had a ring of gold and he use to wear its stone next to his palm. Then he threw it away one day and the people threw away their rings. Then he acquired a ring of silver, which he used as a seal and did not wear.
