It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that he divorced his wife when she was menstruating, and 'Umar asked the Prophet (PBUH) about that. He said: "Tell him to take her back and keep her until she has become pure, then menstruated again, then become pure again. Then if he wishes he may divorce her, or if he wishes he may keep her. That is the iddah (prescribed periods) at which Allah has enjoined the divorce of women."
