مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 5009
Sa'eed ibn Jubayr said: I asked lbn 'Umar: O Abu 'Abd ar-Rahmaan, should a couple who engage in li'aan be separated? He said: Subhaan-Allah, yes. The first one to ask about this was So and so. He said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you thirds if one of us sees his wife committing an immoral action, what should he do? If he keeps quiet, he will be keeping quiet about a serious matter, and if he speaks, he will be speaking of an equally serious matter. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) remained silent and did not answer him. Then the man left and went about his business. After that he came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and said: I have been afflicted with what I asked you about. Then Allah reaveled these verses in Soorat al-Noor: "And for those who accuse their wives..."[al-Noor 24:6-9], to the end of the passage. He recited them to him, and exhorted and adminished him, and reminded him about Allah (PBUH), and told him that the punishment in this world was lighter than the punishment in the Hereafter. He said: No, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I am not lying about her. Then he called the woman and exhorted and reminded her, and told her that the punishment in this world was lighter than the punishment in the Hereafter. She said: By the One Who sent you with the truth, he is lying. He called the man, and he testified four times by Allah that he was telling the truth, and the fifth time that the curse of Allah would be upon him if he was of those who tell a lie. Then he called the woman, and she testified four times by Allah that he was of those who tell a lie, and the fifth time that the wrath of Allah would be upon her if he was telling the truth. Then he separated them
