حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى حُلَّةَ سِيَرَاءَ أَوْ حَرِيرٍ تُبَاعُ فَقَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَوْ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ تَلْبَسُهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَوْ لِلْوُفُودِ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ قَالَ فَأُهْدِيَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَبَعَثَ إِلَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا بِحُلَّةٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مِنْكَ تَقُولُ مَا قُلْتَ وَبَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ بِهَا قَالَ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَبِيعَهَا أَوْ تَكْسُوَهَا
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 4713
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that 'Umar saw a suit of striped silk being offered for sale, and he said to the Prophet ) Why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays, or for (meeting) the delegations? (The Prophet (PBUH)) said: "This is only worn by one who has no share (in the Hereafter).” Then some suits like it were given to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and he sent one of them to 'Umar. He said: I heard what you said (about them) and now you send me one? He said: “I only sent it to you so that you could sell it or give it to someone to wear."
