حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي حَنْظَلَةَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمَا عَنْ الصَّلَاةِ فِي السَّفَرِ قَالَ الصَّلَاةُ فِي السَّفَرِ رَكْعَتَانِ قُلْنَا إِنَّا آمِنُونَ قَالَ سُنَّةُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 4704

It was narrated from Abu Hanzalah: I asked Ibn 'Umar about praying when travelling. He said: The prayer when travelling is two rak'ahs. We said: But we are safe now. He said: (That is) the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH).
