حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ لَمَّا مَاتَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ جَاءَ ابْنُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعْطِنِي قَمِيصَكَ حَتَّى أُكَفِّنَهُ فِيهِ وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُ فَأَعْطَاهُ قَمِيصَهُ وَقَالَ آذِنِّي بِهِ فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ يَعْنِي عُمَرَ قَدْ نَهَاكَ اللَّهُ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ فَقَالَ أَنَا بَيْنَ خِيرَتَيْنِ اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا قَالَ فَتُرِكَتْ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَيْهِمْ
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 4680
Naafi' narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: When 'Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy died, his son came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and said: 0 Messenger of Allah, give me your chemise so that i may shroud him in it, and offer the funeral prayer for him and pray for forgiveness for him. So he gave him his chemise and said: "Let me know (when the body has been prepared)." When he went to offer the funeral prayer for him, 'Umar said: Allah has forbidden you to offer the funeral prayer for the hypocrites. He said: “I was given two choices: Whetlier you (O Muhammad ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness for them' [al-Tawbah 9:80].” So e offered the funeral prayer for him, Allah, may He be exalted, revealed (the verse): "And never [O Muhammad pray (funeral praver) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave “ [al-Tawbah 9:84]. So the funeral prayer was no longer offered for them (the hypocrites).
