حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ سَمِعَ سَالِمًا عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَمِعَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ وَأَبِي وَأَبِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَوَاللَّهِ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرًا
مسند امام احمد بن حنبل · Hadith 4548
It was narrated from az-Zuhri, who heard Saalim (narrate) from his father that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) heard 'Umar (RA) saying: By my father, by my father. He said: "Allah, may He be exalted, forbids you to swear by your fathers.” 'Umar said: By Allah, I have not sworn by them, whether on my own behalf or narrating it from someone else.
