حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَائِ حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ غِيَاثٍ عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَقَ عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَوْ کَانَ الدِّينُ بِالرَّأْيِ لَکَانَ أَسْفَلُ الْخُفِّ أَوْلَی بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ أَعْلَاهُ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَی ظَاهِرِ خُفَّيْهِ
سنن ابودوٗد · Hadith 162
Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: If the religion were based on opinion, it would be more important to wipe the under part of the shoe than the upper but I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiping over the upper part of his shoes.
