أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ لا يَجِدُ مَا يُنْفِقُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ قَالَ: يُفَرَّقُ بَيْنَهُمَا. قَالَ أَبُو الزِّنَادِ: قُلْتُ سُنَّةٌ، فَقَالَ سَعِيدٌ: سُنَّةٌ. قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ: وَالَّذِي يُشْبِهُ قَوْلَ سَعِيدٍ: سُنَّةٌ، أَنْ تَكُونَ سُنَّةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.

Sufyan told us, on the authority of Abu al-Zennad, he said: I asked Saeed bin al-Musayyib about the man who could not find what was spent on him. Abu al-Zinnad said: I said a year, and Saeed said: A year. Al-Shafi’i said: It is similar to the saying of Saeed: Sunnah, that the Sunnah of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was.
