أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي الْمَوَالِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْکَدِرِ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ کَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَلِّمُنَا الِاسْتِخَارَةَ فِي الْأُمُورِ کُلِّهَا کَمَا يُعَلِّمُنَا السُّورَةَ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ يَقُولُ إِذَا هَمَّ أَحَدُکُمْ بِالْأَمْرِ فَلْيَرْکَعْ رَکْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ الْفَرِيضَةِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُکَ بِعِلْمِکَ وَأَسْتَعِينُکَ بِقُدْرَتِکَ وَأَسْأَلُکَ مِنْ فَضْلِکَ الْعَظِيمِ فَإِنَّکَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ کُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي أَوْ قَالَ فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ فَاقْدِرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِکْ لِي فِيهِ وَإِنْ کُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي أَوْ قَالَ فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ وَاقْدُرْ لِي الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ کَانَ ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ قَالَ وَيُسَمِّي حَاجَتَهُ

It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said: “The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم used to teach his Companions to perform Istikharah in all matters, just as he used to teach them Surahs from the Qur’an. He said: ‘If any one of you is deliberating about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two Rak’ahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say: Allahumma innI astakhiruka hi ‘ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi(Allah, I seek Your guidance (in making a choice) by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. Allah, if in Your knowledge, this matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs (or: both in this world and in the Hereafter), then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge it is bad for me and for my religion, my livelihood and my affairs (or: for me both in this world and the next), then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be and make me pleased with it).”

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَعِيلَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ لَمَّا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّتُهَا بَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا أَبُو بَکْرٍ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ تَزَوَّجْهُ فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ أَخْبِرْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَی وَأَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصْبِيَةٌ وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدٌ فَأَتَی رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَکَرَ ذَلِکَ لَهُ فَقَالَ ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهَا فَقُلْ لَهَا أَمَّا قَوْلُکِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَی فَسَأَدْعُو اللَّهَ لَکِ فَيُذْهِبُ غَيْرَتَکِ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُکِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصْبِيَةٌ فَسَتُکْفَيْنَ صِبْيَانَکِ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُکِ أَنْ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدٌ فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِکِ شَاهِدٌ وَلَا غَائِبٌ يَکْرَهُ ذَلِکَ فَقَالَتْ لِابْنِهَا يَا عُمَرُ قُمْ فَزَوِّجْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَزَوَّجَهُ مُخْتَصَرٌ

It was narrated from Umm Salamah, that when her ‘Iddah had ended, Abu Bakr sent word to her proposing marriage to her, but she did not marry him. Then the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم sent ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab with a proposal of marriage. She said: “Tell the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم that I am a jealous woman and that I have sons, and none of my guardians are present.” He went to the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم and told him that. He said: “Go back to her and tell her: As for your saying that you are a jealous woman, I will pray to Allah for you to take away your jealousy. As for your saying that you have sons, your sons will be taken care of. And as for your saying that none of your guardians are present, none of your guardians, present or absent, would object to that.” She said to her son: “‘Umar, get up and perform the marriage to the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم so he performed the marriage.” An abridged form. أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَزَوَّجَهَا وَهِيَ بِنْتُ سِتٍّ وَبَنَی بِهَا وَهِيَ بِنْتُ تِسْعٍ

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم married her when she was six years old, and consummated the marriage with her when she was nine. (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ بْنِ مُسَاوِرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ تَزَوَّجَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِسَبْعِ سِنِينَ وَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ لِتِسْعِ سِنِينَ

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم married me when I was seven years old, and he consummated the marriage with me when I was nine.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْثَرٌ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَقَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ قَالَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ تَزَوَّجَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِتِسْعِ سِنِينَ وَصَحِبْتُهُ تِسْعًا

It was narrated that Abu ‘Ubaidah said: “Aishah said: ‘The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم married me when I was nine and I lived with him for nine years.” (Sahih)

أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ ← أَبِي إِسْحَقَ ← مُطَرِّفٍ ← عَبْثَرٌ، ← قُتَيْبَةُ،

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَائِ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ تَزَوَّجَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهِيَ بِنْتُ تِسْعٍ وَمَاتَ عَنْهَا وَهِيَ بِنْتُ ثَمَانِيَ عَشْرَةَ

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم married her when she was nine and he died when she was eighteen years old. (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَکِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ حَدَّثَنَا قَالَ يَعْنِي تَأَيَّمَتْ حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ عُمَرَ مِنْ خُنَيْسِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ السَّهْمِيِّ وَکَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتُوُفِّيَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ عُمَرُ فَأَتَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْکَحْتُکَ حَفْصَةَ قَالَ سَأَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِي فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ ثُمَّ لَقِيَنِي فَقَالَ قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لَا أَتَزَوَّجَ يَوْمِي هَذَا قَالَ عُمَرُ فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا بَکْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقُلْتُ إِنْ شِئْتَ زَوَّجْتُکَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ فَصَمَتَ أَبُو بَکْرٍ فَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا فَکُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْجَدَ مِنِّي عَلَی عُثْمَانَ فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ ثُمَّ خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَنْکَحْتُهَا إِيَّاهُ فَلَقِيَنِي أَبُو بَکْرٍ فَقَالَ لَعَلَّکَ وَجَدْتَ عَلَيَّ حِينَ عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ حَفْصَةَ فَلَمْ أَرْجِعْ إِلَيْکَ شَيْئًا قَالَ عُمَرُ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرْجِعَ إِلَيْکَ شَيْئًا فِيمَا عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ إِلَّا أَنِّي قَدْ کُنْتُ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ ذَکَرَهَا وَلَمْ أَکُنْ لِأُفْشِيَ سِرَّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَوْ تَرَکَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبِلْتُهَا

‘Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: “Hafsah bint ‘Umar became single when (her husband) Khunais bin Hudhafah As-SahmI (died). He was one of the Companions of the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم , and he died in Al-Madinah.” ‘Umar said: “I went to ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan and offered Hafsah in marriage to him. I said: ‘If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint ‘Umar.’ He said: ‘I will think about it.’ A few days passed, then I met him and he said: ‘It seems that I do not want to get married at the moment.” ‘Umar said: “Then I met Abu Bakr A may Allah be pleased with him, and said: ‘If you wish, I will marry IIaf bint ‘Umar to you.’ Abu Bakr remained silent, and did not give me any answer, and I felt more upset with him than I had with ‘Uthman. Several days passed, then the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم proposed marriage to her and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said: ‘Perhaps you felt upset with me when you offered Uaf in marriage to me, and I did not give you any answer?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Nothing prevented me from giving you an answer when you made the offer to me, except the fact that I had heard the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم speak of her, and I did not want to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم If he had left her, then I would have married her.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِکٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْأَيِّمُ أَحَقُّ بِنَفْسِهَا مِنْ وَلِيِّهَا وَالْبِکْرُ تُسْتَأْذَنُ فِي نَفْسِهَا وَإِذْنُهَا صُمَاتُهَا

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “A previously married woman has more right to decide about herself (with regard to marriage) than her guardian, and a virgin should be asked for permission with regard to marriage, and her permission is her silence.” (Sahih)

ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ← نَافِعُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ ← عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ، ← مَالِكٍ، ← قُتَيْبَةُ،

أَخْبَرَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مَالِکِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْهُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِ نَافِعٍ بِسَنَةٍ وَلَهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ حَلْقَةٌ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْأَيِّمُ أَحَقُّ بِنَفْسِهَا مِنْ وَلِيِّهَا وَالْيَتِيمَةُ تُسْتَأْمَرُ وَإِذْنُهَا صُمَاتُهَا

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “A previously married woman has more right to decide about herself (with regard to marriage) than her guardian, and an orphan girl should be consulted, and her permission is her silence.” (Sahih).

أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الرِّبَاطِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ ابْنِ إِسْحَقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي صَالِحُ بْنُ کَيْسَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ عَبَّاسِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْأَيِّمُ أَوْلَی بِأَمْرِهَا وَالْيَتِيمَةُ تُسْتَأْمَرُ فِي نَفْسِهَا وَإِذْنُهَا صُمَاتُهَا

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ کَيْسَانَ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَيْسَ لِلْوَلِيِّ مَعَ الثَّيِّبِ أَمْرٌ وَالْيَتِيمَةُ تُسْتَأْمَرُ فَصَمْتُهَا إِقْرَارُهَا

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “The guardian has no right (to force) the previously married woman (into a marriage). And an orphan girl should be consulted, and her silence is her approval.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الثَّيِّبُ أَحَقُّ بِنَفْسِهَا وَالْبِکْرُ يَسْتَأْمِرُهَا أَبُوهَا وَإِذْنُهَا صُمَاتُهَا

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “A previously married woman has more right (to decide) about herself (with regard to marriage), and a virgin should be consulted by her father, and her permission is her silence.” (Sahih)
