أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ أَبِي بَکْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَی لَا يَنْکَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَکِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُخَوِّفُ بِهِمَا عِبَادَهُ

It was narrated that Abu Bakrah said: “The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: ‘The sun and moon are two of the signs of Allah, the Most High, and they do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone, rather Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, strikes fear into His slaves through them.” (Sahih).

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَکِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هِشَامٍ هُوَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ عَنْ حَيَّانَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ بَيْنَا أَنَا أَتَرَامَی بِأَسْهُمٍ لِي بِالْمَدِينَةِ إِذْ انْکَسَفَتْ الشَّمْسُ فَجَمَعْتُ أَسْهُمِي وَقُلْتُ لَأَنْظُرَنَّ مَا أَحْدَثَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي کُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ فَأَتَيْتُهُ مِمَّا يَلِي ظَهْرَهُ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَجَعَلَ يُسَبِّحُ وَيُکَبِّرُ وَيَدْعُو حَتَّی حُسِرَ عَنْهَا قَالَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّی رَکْعَتَيْنِ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ

‘Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah said: “While I was (practicing) shooting some arrows in Al-Madinah, the sun became eclipsed. I gathered up my arrows and said: ‘I want to see what the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم will say about the eclipse of the sun.’ So I came to him from behind when he was in the Masjid, and he started to say the TasbIi’z and Takbir and to supplicate until the eclipse was over. Then he stood up and prayed two Rak’ahs with four prostrations.” (Sahih)

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم said: “The sun and moon do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone, rather they are two of the signs of Allah the Most High, so when you see that then pray.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَی قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَشْعَثُ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ أَبِي بَکْرَةَ قَالَ کُنَّا جُلُوسًا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَکَسَفَتْ الشَّمْسُ فَوَثَبَ يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ فَصَلَّی رَکْعَتَيْنِ حَتَّی انْجَلَتْ

It was narrated that Abu Bakrah said: “We were sitting with the Prophet when the sun became eclipsed. He leapt up, dragging his garment, and prayed two Rak’ahs until the eclipse was over.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ خَسَفَتْ الشَّمْسُ عَلَی عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِي أَنْ الصَّلَاةَ جَامِعَةً فَاجْتَمَعُوا وَاصْطَفُّوا فَصَلَّی بِهِمْ أَرْبَعَ رَکَعَاتٍ فِي رَکْعَتَيْنِ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The sun was eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم , and the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم commanded a caller to call out that prayer was about to begin in congregation. So they gathered and formed rows, and he led them in prayer, bowing four times in two Rak’ahs and prostrating four times.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ خَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ کَسَفَتْ الشَّمْسُ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَی الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَامَ فَکَبَّرَ وَصَفَّ النَّاسُ وَرَائَهُ فَاسْتَکْمَلَ أَرْبَعَ رَکَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَانْجَلَتْ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْصَرِفَ

‘Urwah bin Az-Zubair narrated that ‘Aishah the wife of the Prophet said: “The sun was eclipsed during the life of the ProphetThe Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم went Out to the Masjid and stood and said the Takbir, and the people formed rows behind him. He bowed four times and prostrated four times, and the eclipse ended before he finished.” (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ إِسْمَعِيلَ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّی عِنْدَ کُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ ثَمَانِيَ رَکَعَاتٍ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ وَعَنْ عَطَائٍ مِثْلُ ذَلِکَ

It was narrated from Tawus from Ibn ‘Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم prayed when the sun was eclipsed, bowing eight times and prostrating four times. (Sahih) Something similar was also narrated from ‘Ata’.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی عَنْ يَحْيَی عَنْ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ طَاوُسٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ صَلَّی فِي کُسُوفٍ فَقَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَکَعَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَکَعَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَکَعَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ثُمَّ رَکَعَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ وَالْأُخْرَی مِثْلُهَا

It was narrated from Tawus from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم prayed when there was an eclipse. He recited then he bowed, then he recited then he bowed, then he recited then he bowed, then he recited then he bowed, then he prostrated, and he did the second Rak’ah in same fashion. (Sahih)

It was narrated from Kathir bin ‘Abbas, from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم prayed on the day the sun was eclipsed, bowing four times in two Rak’ahs and prostrating four times. (Sahih)

أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ عَنْ عَطَائٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُبَيْدَ بْنَ عُمَيْرٍ يُحَدِّثُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ أُصَدِّقُ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ کَسَفَتْ الشَّمْسُ عَلَی عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَامَ بِالنَّاسِ قِيَامًا شَدِيدًا يَقُومُ بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ يَرْکَعُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ ثُمَّ يَرْکَعُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ ثُمَّ يَرْکَعُ فَرَکَعَ رَکْعَتَيْنِ فِي کُلِّ رَکْعَةٍ ثَلَاثَ رَکَعَاتٍ رَکَعَ الثَّالِثَةَ ثُمَّ سَجَدَ حَتَّی إِنَّ رِجَالًا يَوْمَئِذٍ يُغْشَی عَلَيْهِمْ حَتَّی إِنَّ سِجَالَ الْمَائِ لَتُصَبُّ عَلَيْهِمْ مِمَّا قَامَ بِهِمْ يَقُولُ إِذَا رَکَعَ اللَّهُ أَکْبَرُ وَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ فَلَمْ يَنْصَرِفْ حَتَّی تَجَلَّتْ الشَّمْسُ فَقَامَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَی عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْکَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَکِنْ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُخَوِّفُکُمْ بِهِمَا فَإِذَا کَسَفَا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَی ذِکْرِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ حَتَّی يَنْجَلِيَا

‘Ata’ said: “I heard ‘Ubaid bin ‘Umair say: “Someone whom I trust” — and I think he meant ‘Aishah — told me: There was an eclipse of the sun during the time of the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلمHe led the people in prayer and stood for a very long time, then he bowed, then he stood, then he bowed, then he stood, then he bowed. He prayed two Rak’ahs, bowing three times in each Rak’ah. After bowing for the third time he prostrated a long time. Some men fainted on that day and had to be revived by having buckets of water thrown over them, because of having stood for so long. When he bowed he said: Allahu Akbar, and when he raised his head he said: Sami’ Allahu liman Hamidah. He did not finish until the eclipse had ended. Then he stood and praised and glorified Allah, and said: The sun and moon do not become eclipsed for the death or birth of anyone, but they are two of the signs of Allah with which He strikes fear into you. If they are eclipsed then turn to the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until it (the eclipse) is over.” (Sahih)
