حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ عَلِيٍّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ أَبِيعَ غُلَامَيْنِ أَخَوَيْنِ فَبِعْتُهُمَا فَفَرَّقْتُ بَيْنَهُمَا فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَدْرِكْهُمَا فَارْتَجِعْهُمَا وَلَا تَبِعْهُمَا إِلَّا جَمِيعًا وَلَا تُفَرِّقْ بَيْنَهُمَا

It was narrated from 'Ali that he said: The Messenger of Allah told me to sell two slaves who were brothers, so I sold them and separated them. I mentioned that to the Prophet (PBUH) and he said: "Go and take them back, and only sell them together; do not separate them."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ الْبَزَّارُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّةَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَتَوَضَّأُ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ حَتَّى أَنْقَاهُمَا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَأَخَذَ فَضْلَ طَهُورِهِ فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أُرِيَكُمْ كَيْفَ كَانَ طُهُورُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

It was narrated that Abu Hayyah said: I saw 'Ali (RA) doing uwfioo'. I le washed his hands until they were dean, then he rinsed his mouth three times, then he rinsed his nose three times; he washed his face three times and his forearms three times; he wiped his head and washed his feet up to the ankles. And he took the leftover water and drank it whilst standing. Then he said: I wanted to show you how the Messenger of Allah did wudoo'.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ قَالَ سُئِلَ سَعِيدٌ عَنْ الْأَعْضَبِ هَلْ يُضَحَّى بِهِ فَأَخْبَرَنَا عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ جُرَيِّ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ رَجُلٍ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُضَحَّى بِأَعْضَبِ الْقَرْنِ وَالْأُذُنِ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِسَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ فَقَالَ الْعَضَبُ النِّصْفُ فَأَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ

It was narrated from Jurayy bin Kulaib, that he heard 'Ali (RA) say: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade sacrificing an animal that has lost most of its horn or ear. Qatadah said: I mentioned that to Sa'eed bin al-Musayyab and he said: [That refers to] one that has lost half or more (of its horn or ear).

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ هُبَيْرَةَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ التَّخَتُّمِ بِالذَّهَبِ وَعَنْ لُبْسِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَالْمَيَاثِرِ

It was narrated that 'Ali said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade me to wear gold rings, to wear garments made from a blend of linen and silk, and to use red saddlecloths.

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ وَعَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّةَ الْوَادِعِيِّ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّةَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا بَالَ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ وَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ وَغَسَلَ قَدَمَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَشَرِبَ مِنْ فَضْلِ وَضُوئِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أُرِيَكُمُوهُ

It was narrated that Abu Hayyali said: I saw 'Ali urinate in ar-Rahbah. (Then) he called for water and did wudoo'. He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his forearms three times each, wiped his head and washed his feet three times each. Then he stood up and drank from the leftover water, then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah do what you have seen me do, and I wanted to show it to you.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو صَالِحٍ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابُ بْنُ خِرَاشٍ حَدَّثَنِي الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّخَعِيِّ قَالَ ضَرَبَ عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ هَذَا الْمِنْبَرَ وَقَالَ خَطَبَنَا عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَذَكَرَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ وَقَالَ إِنَّ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ كَانَ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ثُمَّ أَحْدَثْنَا بَعْدَهُمَا أَحْدَاثًا يَقْضِي اللَّهُ فِيهَا

It was narrated that Ibraheem an-Nakha'i said: 'Alqamah bin Qais struck this m inbar and said: 'Ali (RA) addressed us from this minbar ; he praised and glorified Allah, and said what Allah willed that he should say, and he said: The best of this ummah after the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) is Abu Bakr, then 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both. Then we got involved in events and Allah will decide concerning that.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو صَالِحٍ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابُ بْنُ خِرَاشٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ بْنُ خَبَّابٍ عَنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا

It was narrated that 'Abd Khair said: I heard 'Ali (RA) say: The best of this ummah after its Prophet is Abu Bakr, then 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both.

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا مُجَمِّعُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عِمْرَانَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وَالْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هُرْمُزَ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ بِالْقَصِيرِ وَلَا بِالطَّوِيلِ ضَخْمَ الرَّأْسِ وَاللِّحْيَةِ شَثْنَ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَالْقَدَمَيْنِ ضَخْمَ الْكَرَادِيسِ مُشْرَبًا وَجْهُهُ حُمْرَةً طَوِيلَ الْمَسْرُبَةِ إِذَا مَشَى تَكَفَّأَ تَكَفُّؤًا كَأَنَّمَا يَتَقَلَّعُ مِنْ صَخْرٍ لَمْ أَرَ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا بَعْدَهُ مِثْلَهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ و قَالَ أَبُو النَّضْرِ الْمَسْرُبَةُ وَقَالَ كَأَنَّمَا يَنْحَطُّ مِنْ صَبَبٍ و قَالَ أَبُو قَطَنٍ الْمَسْرُبَةُ و قَالَ يَزِيدُ الْمَسْرُبَةُ

It was narrated that 'Ali said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was neither short not tall; he had a large head and beard, large hands and feet, large joints, a reddish face, and a long line of hair from his chest to his navel. When he walked he walked energetically, as if lifting his feet from a rock. I have never seen anyone like him before or since, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو صَالِحٍ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابُ بْنُ خِرَاشٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَفْضَلُ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قُلْتُ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَرَى أَنَّ أَحَدًا مِنْ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَفْضَلُ مِنْكَ قَالَ أَفَلَا أُحَدِّثُكَ بِأَفْضَلِ النَّاسِ كَانَ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قُلْتُ بَلَى فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ أَفَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ كَانَ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

It was narrated that Abu Juhaifah said: I thought that 'Ali (RA) was the best of the people after the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)... and he quoted the hadeeth . I said: No by Allah, O Ameer al-Mu'mineen; I did not think that any of the Muslims after the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was better than you. He said; Shall I not tell you of the best of the people after the Messenger of Allah? i said; Yes. He said: Abu Bakr (RA). Then he said: Shall I not tell you of the best of the people after the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and Abu Bakr? I said: Yes. He said: 'Umar (RA).

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ الْفَزَارِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ سَلْعٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ قَامَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَذَكَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاسْتُخْلِفَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَعَمِلَ بِعَمَلِهِ وَسَارَ بِسِيرَتِهِ حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ اسْتُخْلِفَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فَعَمِلَ بِعَمَلِهِمَا وَسَارَ بِسِيرَتِهِمَا حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَى ذَلِكَ

'Abdul-Malik bin Sal' told us: from 'Abd Khair; I heard him say: 'AH (RA) stood on the minbar and mentioned the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). He said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) died and Abu Bakr (RA) was appointed as his successor, and he did what he had done and followed in his footsteps, and persisted in doing so until Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, took his soul in death. Then 'Umar (RA) was appointed as his successor and he did what they had done and followed in their footsteps, and persisted in doing so until Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, took his soul in death.

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ رِدْفَ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَلَمَّا وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ فِي الرِّكَابِ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَلَمَّا اسْتَوَى قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ وَقَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ثُمَّ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثَلَاثًا وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَى حَدِيثِ وَكِيعٍ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ قُلْتُ مَا يُضْحِكُكَ قَالَ كُنْتُ رِدْفًا لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَفَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتَنِي فَعَلْتُ ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا يُضْحِكُكَ قَالَ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عَجَبٌ لِعَبْدِي يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ غَيْرِي

It was narrated that 'Ali bin Rabee'ah said: I rode behind 'Ali (RA). When he put his foot in the stirrup, he said: Bismillah (in the Name of Allah). When he got on his mount, he said: Al-Hamdu Lillalt. "Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny" [az-Zukhruf 43:13, 14], Abu Sa'eed, the freed slave of Banu Ha shim, said: Then he said al- hamdu lillah three times and Allalni Akbar three times, then he said Subhan Allah three times. Then he said: There is no god but You. Then he [the narrator] went back to the hadeeth of Wakee' and said: Glory be to You, i have wronged myself, so forgive me; no one forgives sins but You. Then he smiled, and I said: What made you smile? He said: I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), and he did what you have seen me do, then he smiled and I said: What made you smile, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Allah, may He be blessed and exalted, says: How remarkable is My slave; He knows that no one forgives sin except Me."
