حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَابِسِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَتَى الْحَجَرَ فَقَالَ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لَا تَضُرُّ وَلَا تَنْفَعُ وَلَوْلَا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبَّلَكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ ثُمَّ دَنَا فَقَبَّلَهُ

It was narrated that 'Abis bin Rabee'ah said: I saw 'Umar (RA) go to the Black Stone and say: By Allah, I know that you are a stone and cannot cause harm or bring benefit. Were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) kiss you, i would not have kissed you. Then he leant down and kissed it.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا دُجَيْنٌ أَبُو الْغُصْنِ بَصْرِيٌّ قَالَ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَلَقِيتُ أَسْلَمَ مَوْلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقُلْتُ حَدِّثْنِي عَنْ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَخَافُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ أَوْ أَنْقُصَ كُنَّا إِذَا قُلْنَا لِعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ حَدِّثْنَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَخَافُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ حَرْفًا أَوْ أَنْقُصَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ فَهُوَ فِي النَّارِ

Dujain Abul-Ghusn, who was from Basrah, said: I came to Madinah and met Aslam, the freed slave of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (RA). I said: Tell me (a report) from 'Umar. He said: I cannot; I am afraid that I will add or subtract something. If we said to 'Umar, Tell us some- thing from the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), he would say: I am afraid that I may add or subtract a letter. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "Whoever tells a lie about me will be in Hell."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ مَوْلَى آلِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَالَ فِي سُوقٍ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهَا أَلْفَ أَلْفِ حَسَنَةٍ وَمَحَا عَنْهُ بِهَا أَلْفَ أَلْفِ سَيِّئَةٍ وَبَنَى لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ

It was narrated that 'Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "Whoever says in a market- place, 'There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner or associate; His is the dominion, to Him all praise is due, all goodness is in His hand, He grants life and death and He has power over all things, Allah will record for him one thousand thousand good deeds and will erase from him one thousand thousand bad deeds, and will build a house for him in Paradise."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُمَيْلٍ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ حَدَّثَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ خَيْبَرَ أَقْبَلَ نَفَرٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُونَ فُلَانٌ شَهِيدٌ وَفُلَانٌ شَهِيدٌ حَتَّى مَرُّوا بِرَجُلٍ فَقَالُوا فُلَانٌ شَهِيدٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَلَّا إِنِّي رَأَيْتُهُ يُجَرُّ إِلَى النَّارِ فِي عَبَاءَةٍ غَلَّهَا اخْرُجْ يَا عُمَرُ فَنَادِ فِي النَّاسِ إِنَّهُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَخَرَجْتُ فَنَادَيْتُ إِنَّهُ لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

'Umar bin al-Khattab (RA) said: On the day of Khaibar, a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: So and so is a martyr. So and so is a martyr, until they passed by a man and said: So and so is a martyr. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "No; I saw him being dragged to Hell because of a cloak that he stole from the booty. Go out and call out to the people, 'No one will enter Paradise except the believers.'" So I went out and called out: No one will enter Paradise except the believers.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَا وَأَبِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَهْ إِنَّهُ مَنْ حَلَفَ بِشَيْءٍ دُونَ اللَّهِ فَقَدْ أَشْرَكَ

It was narrated from Sa'd bin 'Ubaidah, from Ibn 'Umar, that 'Umar (RA) said: No, by my father. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "Stop it! Whoever swears by anything other than Allah has committed an act of shirk."

حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ الْخَيَّاطُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ زَادَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مِنْ الْأُسْطُوَانَةِ إِلَى الْمَقْصُورَةِ وَزَادَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ نَبْغِي نَزِيدُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا مَا زِدْتُ فِيهِ

It was narrated from Nafi' that 'Umar (RA) added to the mosque the area between the pillar and the enclosure, and 'Uthman (RA) added [something to the mosque]. 'Umar said: Were it not for the fact that I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say: "We want to extend our mosque," I would not have added anything to it.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بَعَثَ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْحَقِّ وَأَنْزَلَ مَعَهُ الْكِتَابَ فَكَانَ مِمَّا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ فَرَجَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَجَمْنَا بَعْدَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَدْ كُنَّا نَقْرَأُ وَلَا تَرْغَبُوا عَنْ آبَائِكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ كُفْرٌ بِكُمْ أَوْ إِنَّ كُفْرًا بِكُمْ أَنْ تَرْغَبُوا عَنْ آبَائِكُمْ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تُطْرُونِي كَمَا أُطْرِيَ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ وَإِنَّمَا أَنَا عَبْدٌ فَقُولُوا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ كَمَا أَطْرَتْ النَّصَارَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ

It was narrated from 'Umar that he said: Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, sent Muhammad (PBUH) with the truth, and He sent down with him the Book. One of the things that were revealed to him was the verse of stoning. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) stoned [adulterers] and we stoned [them] after him. Then he said: We used to recite, "Do not forsake your real father (and attribute yourself to someone else), for this is an act of kufr if you do that, or it is an act of kufr to forsake your real father (and attribute yourself to someone else)." And the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "Do not praise me as the son of Maryam was praised; rather I am a slave, so say: His slave and His Messenger” Perhaps Ma'mar said: "As the Christians praised the son of Maryam."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ النَّاسَ يَقُولُونَ مَقَالَةً فَآلَيْتُ أَنْ أَقُولَهَا لَكُمْ زَعَمُوا أَنَّكَ غَيْرُ مُسْتَخْلِفٍ فَوَضَعَ رَأْسَهُ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ رَفَعَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَحْفَظُ دِينَهُ وَإِنِّي إِنْ لَا أَسْتَخْلِفْ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَسْتَخْلِفْ وَإِنْ أَسْتَخْلِفْ فَإِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَدْ اسْتَخْلَفَ قَالَ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ ذَكَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ فَعَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَعْدِلُ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحَدًا وَأَنَّهُ غَيْرُ مُسْتَخْلِفٍ

It was narrated from Salim from Ibn 'Umar that he said to 'Umar (RA): I heard the people saying something so I decided that I should talk to you. They are saying that you are not going to appoint a successor. He lowered his head for a while, then he looked up and said: Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, will protect His religion. If I do not appoint a successor, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did not appoint a successor either; if i do appoint a successor, Abu Bakr (RA) appointed a successor. By Allah, once he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and Abu Bakr, I realized that he was not going to regard anyone else as equal to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and that he was not going to appoint a successor.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ قَالَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ فَقُلْتُ لَكُمَا إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَا صَدَقَةٌ

It was narrated from Malik bin Aws that al-Hadathan said: 'Umar (RA) sent word to me... and he mentioned the hadeeth. i said to you [both]: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "We are not to be inherited from and what we leave behind is charity."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ قَالَ لَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بُكِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ الْمَيِّتَ يُعَذَّبُ بِبُكَاءِ الْحَيِّ

It was narrated that Ibn al- Musayyab said: When Abu Bakr (RA) died, people wept for him. "Umar (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "The deceased is tormented because of the weeping of the living."

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا رَبَاحٌ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَكَفَرَ مَنْ كَفَرَ قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَيْفَ تُقَاتِلُ النَّاسَ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَمَنْ قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَقَدْ عَصَمَ مِنِّي مَالَهُ وَنَفْسَهُ وَحِسَابُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَأُقَاتِلَنَّ مَنْ فَرَّقَ بَيْنَ الصَّلَاةِ وَالزَّكَاةِ إِنَّ الزَّكَاةَ حَقُّ الْمَالِ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ مَنَعُونِي عَنَاقًا كَانُوا يُؤَدُّونَهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَقَاتَلْتُهُمْ عَلَى مَنْعِهَا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ إِلَّا أَنْ رَأَيْتُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ شَرَحَ صَدْرَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِالْقِتَالِ فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (RA) said: When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) died and some people apostatised, 'Umar bin al-Khattab (RA) said: O Abu Bakr, how can you fight the people, when the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah), and whoever says La ilaha illallah , his wealth and his life are protected from me, and his reckoning will be with Allah"? Abu Bakr said: I will most certainly fight those who separate prayer and zaknh, for zakah is what is due on wealth. By Allah, if they withhold from me a small she-goat that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), I will certainly fight them for with- holding it. 'Umar (RA) said: By Allah, as soon as I saw that Allah had opened Abu Bakr's heart to the idea of fighting, I knew that he was right.

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَمْرٍو عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّا لَا نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَا صَدَقَةٌ

It was narrated that 'Umar said: The Messenger of Allah said: "We are not to be inherited from; what we leave behind is charity."
