حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ يَحْيَی أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِکِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَوْلَی أَسْمَائَ بِنْتِ أَبِي بَکْرٍ وَکَانَ خَالَ وَلَدِ عَطَائٍ قَالَ أَرْسَلَتْنِي أَسْمَائُ إِلَی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ فَقَالَتْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّکَ تُحَرِّمُ أَشْيَائَ ثَلَاثَةً الْعَلَمَ فِي الثَّوْبِ وَمِيثَرَةَ الْأُرْجُوَانِ وَصَوْمَ رَجَبٍ کُلِّهِ فَقَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَمَّا مَا ذَکَرْتَ مِنْ رَجَبٍ فَکَيْفَ بِمَنْ يَصُومُ الْأَبَدَ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَکَرْتَ مِنْ الْعَلَمِ فِي الثَّوْبِ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فَخِفْتُ أَنْ يَکُونَ الْعَلَمُ مِنْهُ وَأَمَّا مِيثَرَةُ الْأُرْجُوَانِ فَهَذِهِ مِيثَرَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا هِيَ أُرْجُوَانٌ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَی أَسْمَائَ فَخَبَّرْتُهَا فَقَالَتْ هَذِهِ جُبَّةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيَّ جُبَّةَ طَيَالِسَةٍ کِسْرَوَانِيَّةٍ لَهَا لِبْنَةُ دِيبَاجٍ وَفَرْجَيْهَا مَکْفُوفَيْنِ بِالدِّيبَاجِ فَقَالَتْ هَذِهِ کَانَتْ عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ حَتَّی قُبِضَتْ فَلَمَّا قُبِضَتْ قَبَضْتُهَا وَکَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَلْبَسُهَا فَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُهَا لِلْمَرْضَی يُسْتَشْفَی بِهَا

Abdullah. the freed slave of Asma' (the daughter of Abu Bakr). the maternal uncle of the son of 'Ata, reported: Asma' sent me to 'Abdullah b. 'Umar saying: The news has reached me that you prohibit the use of three things: the striped robe. saddle cloth made of red silk. and the fasting in the holy month of Rajab. 'Abdullah said to me: So far as what you say about fasting in the month of Rajab, how about one who observes continuous fasting? -and so far as what you say about the striped garment, I heard Umar b. Khatab say that he had heard from Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ): He who wears silk garment has no share for him (in the Hereafter), and I am afraid it may not be that striped garment; and so far as the red saddle clotb is concerned that is the saddle cloth of Abdullah and it is red. I went back to Asma' and informed her. whereupon she said: Here is the cloak of Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ). and she brought out to me that cloak made of Persian cloth with a hem of brocade, and its sleeves bordered with brocade and said: This wall Allah's Messenger's cloak with 'A'isha until she died, and when she died. I got possession of it. The Apostle of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) used to wear that, and we waslied it for the sick and sought cure thereby.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَکْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ خَلِيفَةَ بْنِ کَعْبٍ أَبِي ذِبْيَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ أَلَا لَا تُلْبِسُوا نِسَائَکُمْ الْحَرِيرَ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ لَبِسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ

Khalifa b. Ka'b AbCi Dhubyan reported: I heard 'Abdullah b. Zubair addressing the people and saying: Behold! do not dress yuor women with silk clothes for I heard 'Umar b. Khattab as sayinp that he had heard Allah's messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) as saying: Do not wear silk, for one who wear it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يُونُسَ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ قَالَ کَتَبَ إِلَيْنَا عُمَرُ وَنَحْنُ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ يَا عُتْبَةُ بْنَ فَرْقَدٍ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ کَدِّکَ وَلَا مِنْ کَدِّ أَبِيکَ وَلَا مِنْ کَدِّ أُمِّکَ فَأَشْبِعْ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِي رِحَالِهِمْ مِمَّا تَشْبَعُ مِنْهُ فِي رَحْلِکَ وَإِيَّاکُمْ وَالتَّنَعُّمَ وَزِيَّ أَهْلِ الشِّرْکِ وَلَبُوسَ الْحَرِيرَ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَی عَنْ لَبُوسِ الْحَرِيرِ قَالَ إِلَّا هَکَذَا وَرَفَعَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ الْوُسْطَی وَالسَّبَّابَةَ وَضَمَّهُمَا قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ قَالَ عَاصِمٌ هَذَا فِي الْکِتَابِ قَالَ وَرَفَعَ زُهَيْرٌ إِصْبَعَيْهِ

Asim al-Abwal reported on the authority Abu Uthman saying: 'Umar wrote to us when we were in Adharba'ijan saying: 'Utba b. Farqad, this wealth is neither the result of your own labour nor the result of the labour of your father, nor the result of the labour of your mother, so feed Muslims at their own places as you feed (members of your family and yourselves at your own residence), and beware of the life of pleasure, and the dress of the polytheists and wearing of silk garments, for Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) forbade the wearing of silk garments, but only this much, and Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) raised his. forefinger and middle finger and he joined. them (to indicate that only this much silk can be allowed in the dress of a man). 'Asim said also: This is what is recorded in the lette., (sent to us), and Zuhair raised his two fingers (to give an idea of the extent to which silk may be used).

This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of 'Asim.

و حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَهُوَ عُثْمَانُ وَإِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ کِلَاهُمَا عَنْ جَرِيرٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِإِسْحَقَ أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ قَالَ کُنَّا مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ فَجَائَنَا کِتَابُ عُمَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ إِلَّا مَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْهُ شَيْئٌ فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا هَکَذَا وَقَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ اللَّتَيْنِ تَلِيَانِ الْإِبْهَامَ فَرُئِيتُهُمَا أَزْرَارَ الطَّيَالِسَةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُ الطَّيَالِسَةَ

Abu 'Uthman reported: While we were with 'Utba b. Farqad there came a letter of 'Umar (containing the instructions) that Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) had said: None should wear silk (with the exception of so much) but he will have nothing of it in the Hereafter. Abu 'Uthman said: To the extent of two fingers which are close to the thumb, and I was shown the (silk) borders of the Tayalisa mantle (which were about two fingers in breadth and I saw them.

The previous hadith is narrated likewise through another chain of transmitters.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِابْنِ الْمُثَنَّی قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيَّ قَالَ جَائَنَا کِتَابُ عُمَرَ وَنَحْنُ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ أَوْ بِالشَّامِ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَی عَنْ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا هَکَذَا إِصْبَعَيْنِ قَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ فَمَا عَتَّمْنَا أَنَّهُ يَعْنِي الْأَعْلَامَ

Qatada reported: I heard Abe 'Uthman al-Nahdi as saying: There came to us a letter of 'Umar as we were in Adharba'ijan or in Syria in the company of 'Utba b. Farqad (and the letter ran thus): After (usual praise and glorification of Allah) it is stated that Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) has forbidden the use of silk btit to the extent of these two fingers, and Abu Uthman said: We at once understood by these words that he meant (silk) patterns on (the cloth).

و حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ قَتَادَةَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ وَلَمْ يَذْکُرْ قَوْلَ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Qatada but there is no mention of the words of Abd Uthman.

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ وَأَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَإِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ إِسْحَقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الْآخَرُونَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ عَامِرٍ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ خَطَبَ بِالْجَابِيَةِ فَقَالَ نَهَی نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا مَوْضِعَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثٍ أَوْ أَرْبَعٍ

Suwaid b. Ghafala said: 'Umar addressed us at a place known as Jabiya (Syria) and he said: Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) forbade us the wearing of silk but to the extent of two or three fingers or four fingers.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ وَإِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ وَيَحْيَی بْنُ حَبِيبٍ وَحَجَّاجُ بْنُ الشَّاعِرِ وَاللَّفْظُ لِابْنِ حَبِيبٍ قَالَ إِسْحَقُ أَخْبَرَنَا و قَالَ الْآخَرُونَ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُا لَبِسَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا قَبَائً مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ أُهْدِيَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أَوْشَکَ أَنْ نَزَعَهُ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهِ إِلَی عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ قَدْ أَوْشَکَ مَا نَزَعْتَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ نَهَانِي عَنْهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَجَائَهُ عُمَرُ يَبْکِي فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ کَرِهْتَ أَمْرًا وَأَعْطَيْتَنِيهِ فَمَا لِي قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أُعْطِکَهُ لِتَلْبَسَهُ إِنَّمَا أَعْطَيْتُکَهُ تَبِيعُهُ فَبَاعَهُ بِأَلْفَيْ دِرْهَمٍ

Jabir b. Abdullah reported that one day Allah's Apostle ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) put on a cloak made of brocade, which had been presented to him. He then quickly put it off and sent it to 'Umar b. Khattab, and it was said to him: Messenger of Allah. why is it that you put it of immediately. whereupon he said: Gabriel forbade me from it (i. e. wearing of Ods garment), and 'Umar came to him weeping and said: Messenger of Allah you disapproved a thing but you gave it to me. What about me, then? Thereupon be (the Holy Prophet) Wd: I did not give it to you to wear it, but I gave you that you might sell it; and so he (Hadrat Umar) sold it for two thousand dirhams.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّی حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا صَالِحٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ أُهْدِيَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حُلَّةُ سِيَرَائَ فَبَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَيَّ فَلَبِسْتُهَا فَعَرَفْتُ الْغَضَبَ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْکَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْکَ لِتُشَقِّقَهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ النِّسَائِ

Ali reported: A silk cloak was presented to Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ). and he sent it to me and I wore it. but then found some sign of disapproval upon his face, whereupon he said: I did not send it to you that you wear it, but I sent it to you so that you might tear it and make out head dream for your women.
