Sahih Bukhari

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسٌ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ مَازِلْنَا أَعِزَّةً مُنْذُ أَسْلَمَ عُمَرُ.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When (the dead body of) `Umar was put on his deathbed, the people gathered around him and invoked (Allah) and prayed for him before the body was taken away, and I was amongst them. Suddenly I felt somebody taking hold of my shoulder and found out that he was `Ali bin Abi Talib. `Ali invoked Allah's Mercy for `Umar and said, "O `Umar! You have not left behind you a person whose deeds I like to imitate and meet Allah with more than I like your deeds. By Allah! I always thought that Allah would keep you with your two companions, for very often I used to hear the Prophet saying, 'I, Abu Bakr and `Umar went (somewhere); I, Abu Bakr and `Umar entered (somewhere); and I, Abu Bakr and `Umar went out."'

ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْکَةَ ← عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ← عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ← عَبْدَانُ،

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْکَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ وُضِعَ عُمَرُ عَلَی سَرِيرِهِ فَتَکَنَّفَهُ النَّاسُ يَدْعُونَ وَيُصَلُّونَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ فَلَمْ يَرُعْنِي إِلَّا رَجُلٌ آخِذٌ مَنْکِبِي فَإِذَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَتَرَحَّمَ عَلَی عُمَرَ وَقَالَ مَا خَلَّفْتَ أَحَدًا أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أَلْقَی اللَّهَ بِمِثْلِ عَمَلِهِ مِنْکَ وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ کُنْتُ لَأَظُنُّ أَنْ يَجْعَلَکَ اللَّهُ مَعَ صَاحِبَيْکَ وَحَسِبْتُ إِنِّي کُنْتُ کَثِيرًا أَسْمَعُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ذَهَبْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَکْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَدَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَکْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَکْرٍ وَعُمَرُ

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet ascended the mountain of Uhud and he was accompanied by Abu Bakr, `Umar and `Uthman. The mountain shook beneath them. The Prophet hit it with his foot and said, "O Uhud ! Be firm, for on you there is none but a Prophet, a Siddiq and a martyr (i.e. and two martyrs).

اَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِکٍ، ← قَتَادَةَ ← سَعِيدٍ، ← مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَوَاءٍ، وَكَهْمَسُ بْنُ المِنْهَالِ، ← لِي خَلِيفَةُ: ← سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، ← يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ← مُسَدَّدٌ

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ح و قَالَ لِي خَلِيفَةُ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَوَائٍ وَکَهْمَسُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِکٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ صَعِدَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَی أُحُدٍ وَمَعَهُ أَبُو بَکْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَعُثْمَانُ فَرَجَفَ بِهِمْ فَضَرَبَهُ بِرِجْلِهِ قَالَ اثْبُتْ أُحُدُ فَمَا عَلَيْکَ إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ أَوْ صِدِّيقٌ أَوْ شَهِيدَانِ

Narrated Aslam: Ibn `Umar asked me about some matters concerning `Umar. He said, "Since Allah's Apostle died. I have never seen anybody more serious, hard working and generous than `Umar bin Al-Khattab (till the end of his life."

عُمَرُ ابْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ← ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، ← يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُمَرُ هُوَ ابْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَسْلَمَ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ سَأَلَنِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ بَعْضِ شَأْنِهِ يَعْنِي عُمَرَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا قَطُّ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ حِينَ قُبِضَ کَانَ أَجَدَّ وَأَجْوَدَ حَتَّی انْتَهَی مِنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ

Narrated Anas: A man asked the Prophet about the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment) saying, "When will the Hour be?" The Prophet said, "What have you prepared for it?" The man said, "Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle." The Prophet said, "You will be with those whom you love." We had never been so glad as we were on hearing that saying of the Prophet (i.e., "You will be with those whom you love.") Therefore, I love the Prophet, Abu Bakr and `Umar, and I hope that I will be with them because of my love for them though my deeds are not similar to theirs.

أَنَسٍ، ← ثَابِتٍ، ← حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ← سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ السَّاعَةِ فَقَالَ مَتَی السَّاعَةُ قَالَ وَمَاذَا أَعْدَدْتَ لَهَا قَالَ لَا شَيْئَ إِلَّا أَنِّي أُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ مَعَ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَمَا فَرِحْنَا بِشَيْئٍ فَرَحَنَا بِقَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْتَ مَعَ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ قَالَ أَنَسٌ فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبَا بَکْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَأَرْجُو أَنْ أَکُونَ مَعَهُمْ بِحُبِّي إِيَّاهُمْ وَإِنْ لَمْ أَعْمَلْ بِمِثْلِ أَعْمَالِهِمْ

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "Among the nations before you there used to be people who were inspired (though they were not prophets). And if there is any of such a persons amongst my followers, it is 'Umar." Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Among the nation of Bani Israel who lived before you, there were men who used to be inspired with guidance though they were not prophets, and if there is any of such persons amongst my followers, it is 'Umar."

أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ← اَبِیْ سَلَمَۃَ ← أَبِيهِ ← إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سعد2 ← يَحْيَى بْنُ قَزَعَةَ،

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ قَزَعَةَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَقَدْ كَانَ فِيمَا قَبْلَكُمْ مِنْ الْأُمَمِ مُحَدَّثُونَ فَإِنْ يَكُ فِي أُمَّتِي أَحَدٌ فَإِنَّهُ عُمَرُ زَادَ زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ عَنْ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَقَدْ كَانَ فِيمَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ رِجَالٌ يُكَلَّمُونَ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَكُونُوا أَنْبِيَاءَ فَإِنْ يَكُنْ مِنْ أُمَّتِي مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ فَعُمَرُ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ وَلَا مُحَدَّثٍ

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "Whilst a shepherd was amongst his sheep, a wolf attacked them and took away a sheep. The shepherd chased it and got that sheep freed from the wolf. The wolf turned towards the shepherd and said, 'Who will guard the sheep on the day of wild animals when it will have no shepherd except myself?" The people said, "Glorified be Allah." The Prophet said, "But I believe in it and so do Abu Bakr and `Umar although Abu Bakr and `Umar were not present there (at the place of the event).

سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: ← ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، ← عَقِيلٍ، ← اللَّيْثُ ← عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ثَنَا اللَّيْثُ حَدَّثَنَا عُقَيْلٌ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَا سَمِعْنَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَمَا رَاعٍ فِي غَنَمِهِ عَدَا الذِّئْبُ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهَا شَاةً فَطَلَبَهَا حَتَّی اسْتَنْقَذَهَا فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِ الذِّئْبُ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَنْ لَهَا يَوْمَ السَّبُعِ لَيْسَ لَهَا رَاعٍ غَيْرِي فَقَالَ النَّاسُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَإِنِّي أُومِنُ بِهِ وَأَبُو بَکْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَمَا ثَمَّ أَبُو بَکْرٍ وَعُمَرُ

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "While I was sleeping, the people were presented to me (in a dream). They were wearing shirts, some of which were merely covering their (chests). and some were a bit longer. `Umar was presented before me and his shirt was so long that he was dragging it." They asked, "How have you interpreted it, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "Religion."

أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، ← أَبُو أُمَامَةَ بْنُ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ، ← ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، ← عَقِيلٍ، ← اللَّيْثُ ← يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ بُکَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو أُمَامَةَ بْنُ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ بَيْنَا أَنَا نَائِمٌ رَأَيْتُ النَّاسَ عُرِضُوا عَلَيَّ وَعَلَيْهِمْ قُمُصٌ فَمِنْهَا مَا يَبْلُغُ الثَّدْيَ وَمِنْهَا مَا يَبْلُغُ دُونَ ذَلِکَ وَعُرِضَ عَلَيَّ عُمَرُ وَعَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ اجْتَرَّهُ قَالُوا فَمَا أَوَّلْتَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ الدِّينَ

Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama: When `Umar was stabbed, he showed signs of agony. Ibn `Abbas, as if intending to encourage `Umar, said to him, "O Chief of the believers! Never mind what has happened to you, for you have been in the company of Allah's Apostle and you kept good relations with him and you parted with him while he was pleased with you. Then you were in the company of Abu Bakr and kept good relations with him and you parted with him (i.e. he died) while he was pleased with you. Then you were in the company of the Muslims, and you kept good relations with them, and if you leave them, you will leave them while they are pleased with you." `Umar said, (to Ibn "Abbas), "As for what you have said about the company of Allah's Apostle and his being pleased with me, it is a favor, Allah did to me; and as for what you have said about the company of Abu Bakr and his being pleased with me, it is a favor Allah did to me; and concerning my impatience which you see, is because of you and your companions. By Allah! If (at all) I had gold equal to the earth, I would have ransomed myself with it from the Punishment of Allah before I meet Him."

الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ ← ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْکَةَ ← أَيُّوبَ ← إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ← الصَّلْتُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ

حَدَّثَنَا الصَّلْتُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْکَةَ عَنْ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ قَالَ لَمَّا طُعِنَ عُمَرُ جَعَلَ يَأْلَمُ فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَکَأَنَّهُ يُجَزِّعُهُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَئِنْ کَانَ ذَاکَ لَقَدْ صَحِبْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَحْسَنْتَ صُحْبَتَهُ ثُمَّ فَارَقْتَهُ وَهُوَ عَنْکَ رَاضٍ ثُمَّ صَحِبْتَ أَبَا بَکْرٍ فَأَحْسَنْتَ صُحْبَتَهُ ثُمَّ فَارَقْتَهُ وَهُوَ عَنْکَ رَاضٍ ثُمَّ صَحِبْتَ صَحَبَتَهُمْ فَأَحْسَنْتَ صُحْبَتَهُمْ وَلَئِنْ فَارَقْتَهُمْ لَتُفَارِقَنَّهُمْ وَهُمْ عَنْکَ رَاضُونَ قَالَ أَمَّا مَا ذَکَرْتَ مِنْ صُحْبَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرِضَاهُ فَإِنَّمَا ذَاکَ مَنٌّ مِنْ اللَّهِ تَعَالَی مَنَّ بِهِ عَلَيَّ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَکَرْتَ مِنْ صُحْبَةِ أَبِي بَکْرٍ وَرِضَاهُ فَإِنَّمَا ذَاکَ مَنٌّ مِنْ اللَّهِ جَلَّ ذِکْرُهُ مَنَّ بِهِ عَلَيَّ وَأَمَّا مَا تَرَی مِنْ جَزَعِي فَهُوَ مِنْ أَجْلِکَ وَأَجْلِ أَصْحَابِکَ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ أَنَّ لِي طِلَاعَ الْأَرْضِ ذَهَبًا لَافْتَدَيْتُ بِهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَرَاهُ قَالَ حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْکَةَ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ دَخَلْتُ عَلَی عُمَرَ بِهَذَا

Narrated Abu Musa: While I was with the Prophet in one of the gardens of Medina, a man came and asked me to open the gate. The Prophet said to me, "Open the gate for him and give him the glad tidings that he will enter Paradise." I opened (the gate) for him, and behold! It was Abu Bakr. I informed him of the glad tidings the Prophet had said, and he praised Allah. Then another man came and asked me to open the gate. The Prophet said to me "Open (the gate) and give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise." I opened (the gate) for him, and behold! It was `Umar. I informed him of what the Prophet had said, and he praised Allah. Then another man came and asked me to open the gate. The Prophet said to me. "Open (the gate) for him and inform him of the glad tidings, of entering Paradise with a calamity which will befall him. " Behold ! It was `Uthman, I informed him of what Allah's Apostle had said. He praised Allah and said, "I seek Allah's Aid."

اَبِیْ مُوْسیٰ ← أَبُو عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيُّ، ← عُثْمَانَ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ، ← أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ← يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى

حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَی حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَی رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ کُنْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَائِطٍ مِنْ حِيطَانِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَجَائَ رَجُلٌ فَاسْتَفْتَحَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ افْتَحْ لَهُ وَبَشِّرْهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ فَفَتَحْتُ لَهُ فَإِذَا أَبُو بَکْرٍ فَبَشَّرْتُهُ بِمَا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثُمَّ جَائَ رَجُلٌ فَاسْتَفْتَحَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ افْتَحْ لَهُ وَبَشِّرْهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ فَفَتَحْتُ لَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُمَرُ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثُمَّ اسْتَفْتَحَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لِي افْتَحْ لَهُ وَبَشِّرْهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ عَلَی بَلْوَی تُصِيبُهُ فَإِذَا عُثْمَانُ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ

Narrated `Abdullah bin Hisham: We were with the Prophet while he was holding `Umar bin Al-Khattab by the hand.

أَبُو عَقِيلٍ زُهْرَةُ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ، ← حَيْوَةُ، ← ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، ← يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي حَيْوَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَقِيلٍ زُهْرَةُ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَدَّهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ قَالَ کُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ

Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet entered a garden and ordered me to guard its gate. A man came and asked permission to enter. The Prophet said, "Admit him and give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise." Behold! It was Abu Bakr. Another man came and asked the permission to enter. The Prophet said, "Admit him and give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise." Behold! It was `Umar. Then another man came, asking the permission to enter. The Prophet kept silent for a short while and then said, "Admit him and give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise with a calamity which will befall him." Behold! It was `Uthman bin `Affan. `Asim, in another narration, said that the Prophet was sitting in a place where there was water, and he was uncovering both his knees or his knee, and when `Uthman entered, he covered them (or it).

اَبِیْ مُوْسیٰ ← أَبِي عُثْمَانَ ← أَيُّوبَ ← حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ← سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَی رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ حَائِطًا وَأَمَرَنِي بِحِفْظِ بَابِ الْحَائِطِ فَجَائَ رَجُلٌ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَقَالَ ائْذَنْ لَهُ وَبَشِّرْهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ فَإِذَا أَبُو بَکْرٍ ثُمَّ جَائَ آخَرُ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَقَالَ ائْذَنْ لَهُ وَبَشِّرْهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ فَإِذَا عُمَرُ ثُمَّ جَائَ آخَرُ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَسَکَتَ هُنَيْهَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ ائْذَنْ لَهُ وَبَشِّرْهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ عَلَی بَلْوَی سَتُصِيبُهُ فَإِذَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ قَالَ حَمَّادٌ وَحَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَکَمِ سَمِعَا أَبَا عُثْمَانَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَی بِنَحْوِهِ وَزَادَ فِيهِ عَاصِمٌ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ کَانَ قَاعِدًا فِي مَکَانٍ فِيهِ مَائٌ قَدْ انْکَشَفَ عَنْ رُکْبَتَيْهِ أَوْ رُکْبَتِهِ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ غَطَّاهَا

Narrated 'Ubaidullah bin `Adi bin Al-Khiyar: Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and `Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Aswad bin 'Abu Yaghuth said (to me), "What forbids you to talk to `Uthman about his brother Al-Walid because people have talked much about him?" So I went to `Uthman and when he went out for prayer I said (to him), "I have something to say to you and it is a piece of advice for you " `Uthman said, "O man, from you." (`Umar said: I see that he said, "I seek Refuge with Allah from you.") So I left him and went to them. Then the messenger of `Uthman came and I went to him (i.e. `Uthman), `Uthman asked, "What is your advice?" I replied, "Allah sent Muhammad with the Truth, and revealed the Divine Book (i.e. Qur'an) to him; and you were amongst those who followed Allah and His Apostle, and you participated in the two migrations (to Ethiopia and to Medina) and enjoyed the company of Allah's Apostle and saw his way. No doubt, the people are talking much about Al-Walid." `Uthman said, "Did you receive your knowledge directly from Allah's Apostle ?" I said, "No, but his knowledge did reach me and it reached (even) to a virgin in her seclusion." `Uthman said, "And then Allah sent Muhammad with the Truth and I was amongst those who followed Allah and His Apostle and I believed in what ever he (i.e. the Prophet) was sent with, and participated in two migrations, as you have said, and I enjoyed the company of Allah's Apostle and gave the pledge of allegiance him. By Allah! I never disobeyed him, nor did I cheat him till Allah took him unto Him. Then I treated Abu Bakr and then `Umar similarly and then I was made Caliph. So, don't I have rights similar to theirs?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then what are these talks reaching me from you people? Now, concerning what you mentioned about the question of Al-Walid, Allah willing, I shall deal with him according to what is right." Then he called `Ali and ordered him to flog him, and `Ali flogged him (i.e. Al-Walid) eighty lashes.
